Overview
The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship is a prestigious government-funded programme administered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho). It enables outstanding international students to study at Japanese universities across a variety of academic levels and disciplines. Since its establishment, the MEXT Scholarship has supported tens of thousands of international students, contributing to Japan’s academic exchange and global diplomacy.
Study Levels and Tracks
The scholarship offers seven distinct tracks to accommodate students at different stages of their academic journey. The Research Student track supports graduate-level students pursuing master’s or doctoral research, often serving as a pathway to a full degree programme. The Undergraduate track is for students seeking a bachelor’s degree in Japan. The Master’s/PhD track is for those directly enrolling in postgraduate degree programmes. Additional tracks include Teacher Training (for practising teachers), College of Technology (engineering and technical studies), Japanese Studies (for students majoring in Japanese language or culture), and the Young Leaders Program (YLP) for public administrators and emerging leaders in Asia.
What’s Included?
MEXT Scholarship benefits vary by track and are updated annually. Generally, successful recipients receive:
- Full tuition fees at the host Japanese institution (tuition, examination, and entrance fees as per programme rules)
- A monthly stipend for living expenses (approximately ¥117,000–¥242,000 depending on the track)
- Round-trip international airfare to and from Japan
- Japanese language preparatory training (where required by the track)

How to Apply
There are two main application routes for the MEXT Scholarship:
1. Embassy Recommendation: Apply through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in your home country. This route involves a primary screening by the embassy, including document review and written examinations (Japanese, English, and/or subject-specific tests depending on the track), followed by an interview. Shortlisted candidates are then nominated to MEXT for final selection.
2. University Recommendation: Some Japanese universities that have student-exchange agreements with overseas institutions can directly recommend candidates to MEXT. If you are already in contact with a target Japanese university, check whether they hold a recommendation quota and follow their internal application process. University-recommended scholars typically arrive in Japan in September or October.
