Taiwan Government Scholarships for International Students 2026

Overview

The Taiwan Government Scholarships are prestigious awards funded by the Taiwanese government to attract outstanding international students to study in Taiwan. Two main programmes are administered: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Taiwan Scholarship and the Ministry of Education (MOE) Taiwan Scholarship. Both programmes aim to strengthen Taiwan’s international academic partnerships, promote cultural exchange, and position Taiwan as a leading destination for higher education in Asia.

Recipients of the Taiwan Government Scholarships study at accredited public or private universities in Taiwan, gaining access to world-class research facilities, a vibrant academic environment, and rich cultural experiences. The scholarships are available for undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral degree programmes, as well as for Chinese language study.

What’s Included?

The MOFA Taiwan Scholarship provides a monthly living stipend of NTD 25,000 (approximately USD 770) for undergraduate students and NTD 30,000 (approximately USD 920) for graduate students, a round-trip economy class airfare allowance, and a tuition fee waiver. The MOE Taiwan Scholarship similarly provides a monthly living allowance, a tuition subsidy of up to NTD 40,000 per semester, and round-trip airfare. The exact amounts may vary by year and programme type. Both scholarships are designed to cover the essential costs of living and studying in Taiwan.

Eligibility

The Taiwan Government Scholarships are open to nationals of countries that have formal or substantive relations with Taiwan, as well as to citizens of countries that have signed educational exchange agreements with Taiwan. Applicants must not hold Taiwan citizenship and must not currently be enrolled in or have previously studied in Taiwan on another government scholarship. Candidates must demonstrate strong academic performance, with a minimum GPA requirement specified in the guidelines of each programme.

For the MOFA Taiwan Scholarship, applicants must be under 40 years of age and must apply through the Taiwan Embassy, consulate, or representative office in their home country. For the MOE Taiwan Scholarship, applicants must apply through either a Taiwanese university or through their home country’s designated educational authority.

How to Apply

Applications for the MOFA Taiwan Scholarship must be submitted through the Taiwan Embassy or representative office in the applicant’s home country. Each representative office has its own application form, required documents, and national deadline — typically between February and March each year. Required documents generally include academic transcripts, a study plan, letters of recommendation, a language proficiency certificate, and a copy of the applicant’s passport.

For the MOE Taiwan Scholarship, applicants may apply directly to a participating Taiwanese university (which then nominates the candidate) or through the designated authority in their home country. Candidates should visit the Study in Taiwan website for a complete list of participating universities and to find the application forms and instructions specific to their country and chosen programme.
