Government of North Macedonia scholarships

Overview.

The Ministry of Education and Science (MES) of the Republic of North Macedonia has announced several exciting scholarship opportunities for the upcoming 2025/2026 academic year. Whether you are an academically excellent undergraduate student, a talented high schooler, a foreign national of Macedonian descent, or someone looking to study abroad, there is a specialized funding opportunity for you.

What’s included?

These opportunities provide varying levels of financial support depending on the specific scholarship:

  • “Atanas Bliznakov” Foundation Scholarship: Offers a generous financial award of $2,500 USD (paid in its denar equivalent). This amount is transferred once annually directly to the scholarship recipient’s transaction account to support their higher education without financial obstacles.
  • Macedonia 2025 Foundation High School Scholarship: Part of the “Talents Today – Leaders Tomorrow” fund, it provides financial support and developmental opportunities tailored to exceptionally talented high school students to help their future leadership skills.
  • Student Scholarships for Foreign Nationals of Interest: This is a comprehensive, full-ride scholarship. It covers full tuition for the complete duration of studies, free accommodation and meals in student dormitories, a monthly financial stipend, primary health insurance, and costs related to securing a temporary residence permit for study. (Note: Preparatory Macedonian language courses are not covered).
  • EPLO Scholarships in Greece: Offers 10 full and partial scholarships to help cover the costs of studying at the European Law and Governance School (ELGS) of the European Public Law Organization, headquartered in Athens.

Am I eligible?

Eligibility criteria differ strictly based on the target group of each scholarship:

  • “Atanas Bliznakov” Foundation Scholarship: You must be a regular (full-time) student currently enrolled in your first cycle of studies (undergraduate) at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University (UKIM) in Skopje and demonstrate excellent academic performance.
  • Macedonia 2025 Foundation High School Scholarship: You must be a talented high school student enrolled for the 2025/2026 school year.
  • Student Scholarships for Foreign Nationals of Interest: You must be a foreign national of Macedonian descent living in one of the following countries: Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Kosovo, Turkey, Romania, Montenegro, or Greece. Students who previously received this scholarship and lost it due to contract violations are ineligible.
  • EPLO Scholarships in Greece: You must be a student looking to pursue higher education in English at the European Law and Governance School (ELGS) in Greece.

Programs and Levels of Study.

The programs and study levels vary significantly, which is the primary way these scholarships differ from one another:

  • “Atanas Bliznakov” Foundation Scholarship: Dedicated exclusively to Undergraduate (First Cycle) students studying at a single domestic institution: the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University (UKIM) in Skopje.
  • Macedonia 2025 Foundation High School Scholarship: Dedicated exclusively to High School levels. It stands out as the only pre-university funding opportunity on the list.
  • Student Scholarships for Foreign Nationals of Interest: Dedicated to Undergraduate (First Cycle) studies at any of the state universities in North Macedonia (located in Skopje, Bitola, Stip, Ohrid, or Tetovo). The Ministry ultimately reserves the right to select the specific faculty/program from the candidate’s list of preferences.
  • EPLO Scholarships in Greece: Dedicated to both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Unlike the others, this scholarship is for studying abroad (in Greece) rather than domestically, and the curriculum is specifically focused on European Law and Governance taught in the English language.

Assessment Process.

While internal committee grading metrics vary, the general assessment procedures include:

  • “Atanas Bliznakov” Foundation Scholarship: Assessed primarily on the basis of academic excellence. Students must demonstrate high grades to prove they have the capacity for personal and professional development.
  • Macedonia 2025 Foundation High School Scholarship: Evaluated through the MK2025 Foundation’s internal selection committee, which reviews the student’s talents, academic standing, and leadership potential.
  • Student Scholarships for Foreign Nationals of Interest: Candidates are assessed based on a submitted CV, a high school diploma (with a transcript/explanation of the grading system), and a motivation letter explaining why they wish to study in North Macedonia and outlining their top three faculty choices. To maintain the scholarship during their studies, assessed students must pass at least 60% of their exams each academic year by October 30th.
  • EPLO Scholarships in Greece: Assessed directly by the European Law and Governance School admissions team based on standard university admission criteria and the candidate’s alignment with ELGS’s academic rigor.
