OVERVIEW
The Balassi Institute (now part of Tempus Public Foundation) administers Hungarian state scholarships for foreign students, researchers, and lecturers to study or conduct research in Hungary under bilateral cultural and scientific cooperation agreements. This is separate from the Stipendium Hungaricum programme and is specifically for countries that have bilateral cultural/scientific agreements with Hungary.
PROGRAMME TYPES
- Scholarship for higher education studies (Bachelor, Master, PhD)
- Research and postdoctoral scholarships
- Lecturer mobility scholarships
- Language and culture courses in Hungarian
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
- Monthly stipend to cover living expenses
- Full tuition fee waiver at Hungarian public universities
- Accommodation support (in some cases)
- Duration: 1 semester to full degree, depending on the programme
ELIGIBILITY
Eligible countries: Countries with bilateral cultural or scientific agreements with Hungary. Check the official list each year.
HOW TO APPLY?
- Apply through the Hungarian embassy or consulate in your home country
- Applications are typically submitted via the sending partner organisation in your country
- Application period: typically October–January for the following academic year
