Overview
The Scholarships of the Estonian Government are a set of merit-based awards offered by the Estonian government to international students and researchers wishing to study or conduct research in Estonia. Administered by the Archimedes Foundation and supported by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research, these scholarships are designed to promote Estonia as an international study destination and foster academic exchange between Estonia and other countries.
The program includes three distinct scholarship categories: scholarships for degree studies (Bachelor’s and Master’s/PhD), scholarships for short courses, and grants for researchers. Each type targets different academic levels and study durations, providing flexibility for both full-time degree-seeking students and those pursuing shorter academic exchanges. Applications open annually, typically around April–May each year.
What’s Included?
Benefits vary by scholarship type. Below is a breakdown of what each category offers:
- Bachelor’s Studies Scholarship: Monthly stipend of €350. Tuition fees, health insurance, and other costs are NOT covered. Only for studies related to Estonian culture or language.
- Master’s and PhD Studies Scholarship (any field): Monthly stipend of €350 (Master’s) or €422 (PhD). Other costs are NOT covered. Application period opens around April each year.
- Short Courses Scholarship: For active Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral students at a foreign university enrolled for at least 1 year. Supports summer or winter courses related to Estonian language, culture, or other fields. Monthly stipend provided; additional costs typically not covered.
Note: Unlike some other government scholarships, the Estonian Government Scholarships do NOT cover tuition fees, accommodation, travel costs, or health insurance. The monthly stipend is intended as a partial contribution to living expenses only.
