Overview

Schwarzman Scholars is a highly prestigious, fully funded one-year Master of Global Affairs degree program based at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China — one of the world’s leading academic institutions. Launched in 2016, the program was the first scholarship of its kind specifically designed to respond to the geopolitical realities of the 21st century, with a central focus on deepening understanding between China and the rest of the world.

Each year, approximately 200 outstanding young leaders are selected from around the world to take part in this immersive experience. Schwarzman Scholars are a diverse, high-caliber cohort aged 18–28 who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership potential, and intercultural competency. The program offers an unparalleled combination of world-class education, mentorship from global leaders, and hands-on experience in China.

What’s Included?

Schwarzman Scholars is a fully funded scholarship that covers all major expenses for the one-year programme. Recipients receive the following benefits:

  • Full Tuition: All tuition costs for the Master of Global Affairs degree at Tsinghua University are fully covered.
  • Accommodation: On-campus housing at Schwarzman College, a state-of-the-art residential facility at Tsinghua University.
  • Living Expenses: A monthly stipend to cover living costs during the one-year programme.
  • International Travel: Round-trip travel to and from Beijing for the duration of the programme.
  • Books and Academic Materials: All required course materials and books are provided.
  • Excursions and Field Trips: Organized educational trips across China and internationally to deepen cross-cultural understanding.
  • Leadership Development: Access to high-level mentorship, networking events, and engagements with global business, government, and academic leaders.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the Schwarzman Scholars Program, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: Applicants must be at least 18 and not yet 29 years of age as of August 1 of their enrollment year.
  • Education: Must hold an undergraduate degree (or be on track to complete one) by August 1 of the enrollment year. All fields of study are welcome.
  • English Proficiency: All teaching is in English. Non-native speakers must submit TOEFL (minimum 100), IELTS (minimum 7.0), Cambridge C1/C2 (minimum 185), or Duolingo (minimum 130) scores, unless the applicant studied for at least two years at an English-medium institution.
  • Leadership Qualities: Candidates must demonstrate strong leadership abilities, exemplary character, intellectual aptitude, entrepreneurial spirit, and intercultural competency.
  • Nationality: Open to candidates from all countries worldwide.

How to Apply

The Schwarzman Scholars application process is comprehensive and competitive. Here is how to apply:

  • Complete the online application form at schwarzmanscholars.org/admissions. The form must be completed in English.
  • Submit a Leadership Essay (750 words) and a Statement of Purpose (500 words).
  • Upload official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
  • Provide three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to your intellectual abilities and leadership potential.
  • Submit a short video self-introduction (maximum 1 minute).
  • Upload a current resume/CV (maximum 2 pages).
  • Submit any required English proficiency test scores (if applicable).
  • Shortlisted candidates are invited to attend a panel interview in October or November.

Note: Many universities have internal pre-application processes. Check with your campus fellowship advisor early in the process.
